About a month ago, I stumbled upon a blog article about the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. It appears that a couple of blokes with the Sydney Cafe Racers group saw a photo of a fully-suited “Don Draper” on a motorcycle and thought “Hey, we should do that…”
Fast-forward 13 months later and this idea spawned in a pub has traveled around the world. 60 cities (or more) in almost every continent, hosted DGR’s among their Cafe Racer community.
The DC contingent totaled around 20 bikes and took our ties flapping in the wind from Georgetown, along GW Parkway to Old Town Alexandria, on to George’s house at Mt. Vernon, and then back through DC to the U.S. Capitol. (I’m just realizing how much of a George Washington-themed day it was…) It probably couldn’t have been more perfect riding weather!
I was pleasantly surprised by the crowd. A lot of new riders we’d never met before – all looking very distinguished. A couple of mechanical issues. Marc had some clutch issues with his Royal Enfield, and unintentionally he was left to fend off the “Mount Vernon Estate Police” (sorry about that Marc). I think a support truck is in order for future rides like this…
If you have photos and video from the event, please share it with us. Email me at: kevin@dctriumph.com or try a shared folder via Dropbox. (You can sign up for free storage and send the share to kev@altvis.net.) We’ll post everything here and on our facebook page.
I have no doubt that we’ll see this ride again next year. So start shopping for new suits and prepping your ride – we should be distinguished again!
Some VERY SHORT videos of the ride…
