We’re dry cleaning our jackets, pressing our shirts and spit-polishing our shoes.
One month from today, we’re suiting up and riding as part of the DC Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride 2014. Over 50 riders on retro inspired bikes touring through DC and Old Town. Last year, the international ride raised over $277.000 for The Prostate Cancer Foundation and this year we want to go further. The goal is $1 million worldwide!
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in 2012 in Australia. Inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit, it was decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles and bring the niche motorcycle communities together. That first ride brought together over 2,500 riders across 64 cities. The success of the event encouraged the founder to consider how it could be used to support a worthy cause. And the rest, as they say, is stylishly-attired history.
This year, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride has teamed up with that most iconic and dapper of motorcycle companies, Triumph Motorcycles, to help add some highbrow horsepower to the event and twist the throttle towards the end of prostate cancer.
Mark the 28th of September in your leather-bound desk calendar. Join a ride, donate to the cause or just come and cheer along some of your community’s finest chaps and chapettes as they give prostate cancer its marching orders in style.
How to join the ride?
For fundraising and legal reasons, the organizers want everyone to sign-up on the official website to ride. Go to https://www.gentlemansride.com, sign-up and join the DC Triumph team. After that, you’ll be given all of the info about where to meet and the route of the ride.
The facebook event page is here. For a bit of history, check out the write-up of last year’s ride…
